Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Dangers

How can carbon monoxide poisoning be prevented?

Did you know that every home with at least one fuel-burning appliance/heater, attached garage or fireplace should have at least one carbon monoxide alarm? Here are some easy steps you can take to help prevent carbon monoxide poisoning in your home:

  • Properly equip your home with carbon monoxide alarms on every level and in sleeping areas.
  • Every year have the heating system, vents, chimney and flue inspected by a qualified technician.
  • Regularly examine vents and chimneys for improper connections, visible rust and stains.
  • Install and operate appliances according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Never use a gas range/stove to heat the home.
  • Never leave your car idling in a closed garage. Carbon monoxide can seep into your home through vents and doors.

Carbon Monoxide is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America. Make sure your family is protected! For further information or to have CO detectors professionally installed in your home, contact Peterson Heating & Cooling.

Protect Yourself and Your Family

Carbon Monoxide Dangers

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas produced by incomplete combustion of fuels such as natural and LP gas. Exposure to CO can cause fatigue, chest pains, impaired vision and coordination, headaches, dizziness, confusion, nausea and can even be fatal.

•   Every year there are more than 2,000 fatalities in the United States from CO produced by improperly installed or maintained fuel-burning appliances.
•   The CO alarm’s peak level memory allows health  care professionals to quickly assess the level of exposure in the event of an alarm.
•   A rechargeable lithium ion battery ensures continued detection and warning even in a power outage.
•   For peace of mind, you can check your CO alarm with the simple push of a button.

Carrier® carbon monoxide (CO) alarms use sophisticated electronics and unmatched sensor technology to detect and record the levels of CO circulating in your indoor air. You can monitor the current CO level in your home on a large, easy-to-read display. When dangerous levels of CO are present, a loud, audible alarm alerts you and your family automatically. Carrier recommends placing a CO alarm on each level of the house and in every bedroom.

WiFi Thermostats

You're not here...No problem!

ecobee 3 Smart Wi-Fi Thermostat - EB-STATE3-02 - Thermostats at Abt Electronics
The Lake of the Ozarks is the perfect place for a weekend getaway. Thousands of second homeowners come to the lake throughout the summer to enjoy boating, fishing, and various events throughout the summer. But, there is ONE downfall to owning a weekend home at the lake...

Yes, this is a bit of a repeat from something I posted in the spring, but it is even more important to note in the fall and winter months. No one wants to pay to heat or cool a home that isn't being used, so most second homeowners set their thermostats to 50 or 60 degrees in the winter. What happens if your heat goes out during a week of freezing tempuratures and you're not here to know there is even a problem?

Now, there is a solution! Peterson Heating & Cooling is excited to offer several brands and varieties of WiFi thermostats. A WiFi thermostat allows you to monitor and control the heating and cooling system in your home from your computer, iPad, or smartphone. WiFi thermostats offer differing functions and abilities depending on how much you want to spend, however they can start as low as $225 installed. If you want a higher grade model they can even be set up to send you and email if your temperature drops below 50 degrees in the winter...saving you thousands of dollars on broken pipes!

For more information about WiFi thermostats, contact Peterson Heating & Cooling at (573) 280-9647.

The Benefits of Yearly Air Conditioner Maintenance

It may not feel like it today, but summer is just around the corner and it won't be long until we are all running our air conditioners and complaining that it is just too hot! The hottest days of summer (the days we need our air conditioners the most) are the same days that air conditioners are most likely to break down. But, there is good news! You can actually save money on your utility bills and help prevent your system from breaking down by having a maintenance check performed on your system in the spring.

Benefits of a Yearly Tune Up

1. Lower Energy Bills

2. Cleaner Indoor Air Quality

3. Help Prevent Break Downs

4. Extend the Life of Your System

5. Increase the Overall Efficiency

Just like having the oil changed in your car and regular check ups with your dentist, having your heating and cooling system checked regularly can actually save you money in the long run. Your HVAC technician will clean your system, check your air filter, and test all major and minor parts of your air conditioner to make sure it is operating efficiently. It is not uncommon for technicians to catch minor problems that can be easily corrected before they become major problems. If you haven't already had your system checked this spring, now is the time to contact Peterson Heating & Cooling to be sure your system is operating efficiently this summer!

R-22 Phaseout

Background: In 2004 the Montreal Protocol was enacted to reduce the consumption of HCFCs. The protocol required the US to reduce HCFC consumption by 75% in 2010 and will require consumption to be reduced by 90% in 2015. By 2020, consumption must be reduced by 95.5%.

What does this mean to the consumer?

HVAC manufacturers are no longer able to produce new air conditioners and heat pumps containing R-22. If you already own an R-22 system, you can continue to operate the system as you normally would. If you are purchasing a new system, you should consider purchasing a system that contains R-410A, a less costly and more environmentally friendly refrigerant. The downside to owning a system that contains R-22 refrigerant, is that as supplies continue to decrease, the cost of adding R-22 to your system will continue to rise. By 2020, R-22 production and importation into the United States will be banned entirely.

As repair costs have increased significantly, there are a few contractors that have attempted to find their own substitutes to R-22. The EPA warns homeowners, home improvement contractors and air conditioning technicians of potential safety hazards related to the use of propane or other unapproved refrigerants. Air conditioning systems are not designed to handle propane or other flammable refrigerants and the use of these substances poses a potential fire or explosion hazard. A reputable HVAC contractor will never suggest the use of unapproved refrigerants in your heating and cooling system.
